Indian Head Massage
Also known as Champissage, this ancient complimentary therapy was originally used to improve scalp and hair condition, it still holds an important role in Indian society as a principle method of healing, both relieving and preventing pain.
With the aim of rebalancing the bodies energy, the therapist will perform a number of restorative strokes on the recipient's scalp, face, neck, shoulders and arms, incorporating the use of acupressure points throughout. It is performed seated and is normally shorter in duration than a full body massage.
What To Expect From A Treatment With Us
A well executed Indian head massage like ours can transport you away from everyday stresses to a place of serenity and relaxation, clearing your mind and melting away tension, making it easier to think and be. Your therapist will use a variety of pressures and techniques to loosen and relax your upper back and above, lightly stretching your neck, applying deep circular strokes to your scalp and relieving muscle work on your shoulders.
Our therapists have an in-depth knowledge of acupuncture, allowing us to incorporate powerful acupressure points often ignored by other Indian Head Massage therapists. Used correctly, working acupressure points can help to remove blockages in your natural flow of energy, in turn helping a range of issues including stress levels, low motivation, difficulty sleeping and mental blocks.
The back and shoulder portion of the treatment can be performed over your clothes however we suggest you either wear a top that easily reveals your upper back or remove your top for this portion of the massage to enjoy the full benefit. A soft towel can be provided for your modesty.

History of Indian Head Massage
Indian Head Massage has its origins in Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine developed in the Himalayas by Rishis (holy wise men). Ayurveda stems from the Sanskrit words Ayur and Veda, meaning "Life" and "knowledge".
Beginning as an oral tradition, Ayurveda was first recorded over 5,000 years ago with four sacred texts named the Vedas.
Through deep meditation and religious introspection the Rishis divined the fundamental principles of which this science is built upon, making advances beyond their years in many fields including: psychology, physiology & human anatomy, surgery, exercise, herbal medicine and the medicinal effects of minerals & metals. Their underlying philosophy being that maintaining a state of balance and harmony, now known scientifically as homeostasis, will result in long-lasting health.
Ayurvedic teachings dictate that a person's health is impacted by all areas of their life; their thoughts, feelings, physical actions and purpose for being must all be aligned and in harmony. Therefore the Vedas cover a wide spectrum of topics, from human behaviour, health and healthcare techniques, to astrology, spirituality, art, politics and government. Within this spectrum of knowledge they viewed massage as a fundamental method of healing and prevention, to be performed as a divine gift of mutual self-care.
Indian Head Massage is now a globally recognised treatment, brought to the West by Narendra Mehta in the 1970's. It was in this era when the practice developed to include the face, neck, shoulders and upper arms, initially only being performed on the scalp. This allows the therapist to address the most important energy channels in the body and relieve muscle tension on a larger scale.
